Educational Experience
I have had the opportunity to work in a variety of settings throughout my career. I have held positions at the middle school, high school and central office levels. I had the privilege of helping to start newer programs in Guilford County including a middle school Global Studies magnet program at The Academy at Lincoln and a Virtual Program for the Occupational Course of Study. My tenure at Lincoln as Athletics and Activities Director truly began my journey as an administrator. I also enjoyed my time working with the Saturn Program, a county-wide blended learning program for reluctant learners aimed at improving graduation rates, one of the first of its kind. The Graduation Coach position at Grimsley High School brought the Saturn Program Coordinator to the school level and combined it with a student support role, one that saw improvement in our graduation rate to nearly 84%. In New Hanover County, I was part of a shift in the disciplinary philosophy of the county towards an intervention model that afforded greater opportunity to forge relationships with students. As Assistant Principal at Heide Trask High School in Pender County, I served as the school’s testing coordinator and was able to meet our participation goals for all testing which hadn’t happened in the two years prior.

Educational Philosophy
Educating a reluctant society has become, at times, as difficult as getting an elephant on an elevator. Fortunately, restoring the value to education can be achieved in a similar manner—by selling ourselves first, and then our content, as a means of building trusting relationships. When trying to get an elephant on an elevator, you can stand behind him and yell, curse, or even prod him with a stick, but he may not budge. We as educators know that to prepare the elephant for this type of task, we must start months in advance. We create a practice elevator and work with the elephant daily. We provide skills and encouragement for the elephant to overcome small difficulties and, consequently, we create that trusting relationship. The elephant has then bought into us, which leads him to buy into what we’re trying to teach him. In the end, how do you get an elephant on an elevator? Easy, all we do is walk on the elevator, and the elephant will follow.
